Kangaroobie Meats is a business run by Princetown cattle farmers Matt & Sophie Bowker. They are backed by hundreds of years of farming experience in the South Western District of Victoria. They follow sustainable farming ethos and are passionate about animal welfare. There are no pesticides, broadacre herbicides or hormones used on the farm.
Kangaroobie Meats is committed to reducing food miles, ethical slow food production and constantly improving the natural ecology of their family-owned farm.
Matt Bowker is a sixth generation farmer at Kangaroobie, just off the Great Ocean Road a few minutes’ drive east of the Twelve Apostles. Matt’s great-great-great grandfather chose the 2000 acre property more than 150 years ago where they now grow Simmental-Angus cross cattle. In the 1970s Matt’s parents took over the farm and decided to diversify and offer school-camp accommodation at Kangaroobie.
Matt & Sophie took on both the farm and accommodation in the late 1990s and it was the regular requests from camp guests who wanted to take the taste of Kangaroobie beef home with them which germinated the concept for Kangaroobie Meats.
Apart from running the camp and farm at Kangaroobie, Matt and Sophie are also raising the seventh generation of Bowkers – their sons Lachlan, Christopher and Charlie.
Matt, an environmental science teacher, has a passion for the variety of diverse habitats represented on Kangaroobie and nearby. Apart from undertaking Landcare projects on the property, which includes eucalypt forests, coastal heath and riverlands, he is also a member of EstuaryWatch.
