April Farm news

Posted by

On Saturday Sophie, Christopher and I rode our bikes as part of a relay from Swan Hill to Port Fairy to raise money for the local Timboon Hospital. It was a great ride with some challenging head winds, some terrible dad jokes and a very good group of riders from the local area. It is dry out there. You would have all heard of the dry/drought conditions that are affecting large swathes of the country and it is difficult to understand what that actually means for individual farmers and us all. We are currently in a great situation on the farm - plenty of rain, full water tanks, cows in great condition and a really successful calving has just been completed. From Swan Hill to 10 kms from the coast it was parched and speaking to a couple of farmers, they have received around 5mm of rain over the summer. It makes it very difficult for us all because of the increases the dry weather brings to feed costs, depressing the prices of the animals themselves. If only I could send some of the rain we are getting in their direction….

The Bulls are getting excited! They have checked their calendars and they know the 1st of May is fast approaching. The release date. 10 weeks of mating ahead of them after a long quiet time with (hopefully) as much success as last year. Our traditional Easter family tradition of vaccination, calf marking and tagging is happening again this year so while you are enjoying your eggs, we will be making sure our next lot of calves are happy, healthy and vaccinated against things like black leg, pulpy kidney and tetanus. Have a fantastic Easter and enjoy the meat this month.
